On monday, December 19th at 7 p.m. opens at Madre museum the solo show of the Croatian artist Andreja Kuluncic: Are you optimistic about the future? an exhibition organized in collaboration with the Museum for Contemporary Art of Zagreb (MSU)
The exploration of new models of social encounters and communication, a concern for social issues, the interaction with different kinds of public and the collaboration on collective projects are the main features of the work of the Croatian artist Andreja Kuluncic. Starting from her multidisciplinary network and conceiving the work of art as a research, a process of cooperation and self-organization, the artist requires the active participation of the public to complete her work. Using simple methods, discreet “traps” that emulate everyday media and are cunningly inserted into them, the artist seeks to re-examine our relation to the others and ultimately to awaken a sense of responsibility.
Are you optimistic about the Future? is a survey of the artist’s work, combined with three major works from her production over the last ten years. Women. Index, a site-specific project for the city of Naples, is a participatory work in which the artist adopts viral strategies using mainstream popular media to reach her intended audience, and ultimately an invitation to women to raise their consciousness, to define their position within the family and social context. Reconstruction (Of an Unimportant Day in our History and of an Important Day in our History) is a documentary filmed in the now abandoned and decaying castle of Tikveš, once an opulent Habsburg residence, later on one of Tito’s hunting lodges and finally a base for the Serbian paramilitary formations. With the voice of the custodian on the background – who, pressed by the artist’s voyeurism, describes insignificant details of protocol, both of the ephemeral everyday life of Tito and of the fateful meeting with its mysterious content between Franjo Tudjman and Slobodan Miloševic, Reconstruction becomes a film about the “unseen”, in which the war is never directly mentioned. Finally, Distributive Justice is an ongoing project which takes on a different form in every venue, being developed through discussions, lectures and interviews. The most important part of this work is the interaction with individuals, during which the artist directly poses a series of disturbing questions: “Is it possible to make a just distribution of goods?”, “How to define the parameters of a just society?”, “Is a just society possible?”; direct questions posed through simple questionnaires and games on the net designed to provide an incentive to be active and think, and which make it possible to undertake further diagnoses by setting individual responses within a broader framework that can be measured against both local and global coordinates.
Andreja Kuluncic’s work has been featured in exhibitions such as Documenta 11 (Kassel), Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt/Main), 8. Istanbul Biennial (Istanbul), Tirana Biennal 3, Liverpool Biennial (Liverpool), 10th Triennale India (New Delhi) e suoi lavori sono stati esposti al PS1 (New York), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Walker Art Centre (Minneapolis), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Casino Luxemburg, Moderna Galerija (Ljubljana), MSU – Museum of Contemporary Art (Zagreb).

SEI OTTIMISTA SUL FUTURO?

Lunedì 19 dicembre 2011 alle ore 19 inaugura, negli spazi del Museo Madre di Napoli, la personale dell’artista croata Andreja Kuluncic: Sei ottimista sul futuro? Mostra organizzata in collaborazione col Museum for Contemporary Art di Zagabria (MSU).
L’esplorazione di nuovi modelli di incontro sociale e di comunicazione, l’interesse per temi sociali, il confronto con pubblici diversi e la collaborazione a progetti collettivi, sono le caratteristiche del modus operandi dell’artista croata Andreja Kuluncic. Partendo dal suo network multidisciplinare, e concependo l’opera d’arte come una ricerca, un processo di cooperazione e di autorganizzazione, l’artista prevede una partecipazione attiva del pubblico per completare il lavoro. Attraverso metodologie semplici, “trappole” discrete che emulano, e sornionamente, si inseriscono nella quotidianità dei media, l’artista mira a riesaminare il nostro rapporto con gli altri, ed in definitiva ad attivare un sentimento di responsabilità.
Sei ottimista sul futuro? è una ricognizione sul lavoro dell’artista, scandita da tre opere fondamentali della produzione degli ultimi dieci anni. Index.donne, progetto site-specific per la città di Napoli, è un lavoro partecipativo nel quale l’artista riccorre a strategie virali utilizzando mezzi popolari di mainstream per raggiungere il pubblico desiderato, ed è – in definitiva – un invito alle donne a prendere coscienza, a definire la propria posizione all’interno del contesto familiare e sociale.
Ricostruzione (di un giorno non importante della nostra storia e di un giorno importante della nostra storia) è un documentario girato nell’ormai abbandonato e decadente castello di Tikveš, un tempo dimora opulenta degli Asburgo, poi residenza di caccia di Tito e infine base per le formazioni paramilitari serbe. Sullo sfondo della narrazione del custode che – incalzato dal voyesrismo dell’artista – descrive minuziosamente dettagli insignificanti di protocollo, sia delle effimere quotidianità di Tito che dell’incontro fatale – e dal misterioso contenuto – tra Franjo Tu man e Slobodan Miloševic, Ricostruzione diviene un film sull’ “invisibile”, in cui la guerra non viene mai direttamente citata.
Infine, Giustizia distributiva è un progetto in divenire, che assume in ogni luogo un aspetto diverso, sviluppandosi attraverso discussioni, lezioni, interviste. La parte più importante di questo lavoro è l’interazione con le singole persone cui l’artista pone direttamente una serie di domande scomode: «È possibile operare una giusta distribuzione dei beni?», «come definire i parametri di una società giusta?», «è possibile l’esistenza di una società giusta?» Domande dirette, poste attraverso semplici questionari e giochi in rete volte a dare un incentivo ad attivarsi, a riflettere, e che permette di stabilire ulteriori diagnosi, di collocare le singole
risposte in un quadro più ampio e misurabile sia su coordinate locali che globali.
Il lavoro di Andreja Kuluncic è stato presentato in numerose mostre internazionali, tra cui: Documenta 11 (Kassel), Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt/Main), 8.
