Consciousness And Portraits Of Sacrifice is the first Italian one man show by Anglo-American artist Anthony James.
In a synthesis of formal and conceptual elegance, the works of Anthony James blend technical precision, repetition and spectacle, revealing the mythical and persistent influence of a veiled surreal minimalism in art and contemporary culture.
The Milanese space hosts two installations by the artist of the series Birch Cube, from which are configured as two transparent light boxes, luminous cubes that contain intricate virgin forests of birch wood, multiplies infinitely thanks to mirrors cleverly positioned to disorientate the gaze, which is absorbed in an evocative image capable of relocating spectators in an unnaturally distant and reflective space. The wood thus remains trapped in this game of illusions, tremendously immobile and removed from the hand of man; the works of Anthony James become minimalist showcases similar to a temple, reliquaries of large dimensions.
In the past the artist has already interred the charred remains of his Ferrari 355 Spider, now for his future projects he turns to objects of fetishism from war, such as the AK-47 assault rifle or the Russian MIG-15 warplane, which he seeks to immortalise in a dystrophic entanglement of mirrors and reflecting lights. The interest of the artist for the war topic is also evident in the works in the show from the series Today Was A Good Day: these are three “shotgun paintings”, mirrored polished steel sheets that the artist riddles with gun-bullets from the back.
A sensation of lascivious and stylised violence that adorns the vestiges of death is inevitably affirmed in the representation of James’ works, protected in an abyss of solitary space, ending up representing the contemporary conservation of progress in the 21st century.

Anthony James was born in 1974 in England and gained his diploma at the Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London in 1998. His works have been exhibited at important museums and international fairs and are included in major public and private collections, including at the GM Building and the Seagram Building in New York. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Consciousness And Portraits Of Sacrifice è la prima personale italiana dell’artista anglo-americano Anthony James.
In una sintesi di eleganza formale e concettuale, le opere di Anthony James fondono precisione tecnica, ripetitività e spettacolarità, mettendo a nudo l’influenza mitica e persistente di un minimalismo velatamente surreale nell’arte e nella cultura contemporanea.
Lo spazio milanese ospita due installazioni dell’artista della serie Birch Cube, che si configurano come due light box trasparenti, cubi luminosi che custodiscono intricate foreste vergini di legno di betulla, moltiplicate all’infinito grazie agli specchi sapientemente posizionati a disorientare lo sguardo, che viene assorbito in un’immagine suggestiva capace di ricollocare lo spettatore in uno spazio innaturalmente distante e riflettente. Il legno rimane così intrappolato in questo gioco illusionistico, tremendamente immobile e avulso dalla mano dell’uomo; le opere di Anthony James diventano vetrine minimaliste simili ad un tempio, reliquiari di grandi dimensioni.
Se in passato l’artista aveva già tumulato i resti carbonizzati della sua Ferrari 355 Spider, per i suoi progetti futuri si rivolge ad oggetti di feticismo bellico, come il mitragliatore AK-47 o l’aereo da guerra russo MIG-15 che egli cerca di immortalare in un intrico distrofico di specchi e luci riflettenti. Anche nelle opere in mostra della serie Today Was A Good Day è palese l’interesse dell’artista per il tema della guerra: si tratta infatti di tre “shotgun paintings”, lastre d’acciaio lucidate a specchio che l’artista crivella dal retro a colpi di fucile.
Nella rappresentazione delle opere di James si afferma inevitabile una sensazione di violenza lasciva e stilizzata che abbellisce le vestigia della morte, protetta in un abisso di spazio solitario, e finisce per rappresentare la contemporanea conservazione del progresso nel XXI secolo.

Anthony James nasce nel 1974 in Inghilterra e consegue il diploma presso il Central St. Martins College of Art and Design di Londra nel 1998. Le sue opere sono state esposte presso importanti musei e fiere internazionali e il suo lavoro è incluso in importanti collezioni pubbliche e private, tra cui il GM Building ed il Seagram Building a New York. Attualmente vive e lavora a Los Angeles.
