The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi and miart are joining forces for the first time to present Liberi Tutti, a miniature festival of live events which will keep the energy of Milan’s contemporary art fair flowing well into the night. From 10 PM to 12 AM every evening from 3 to 6 April, international artists will stage performance pieces, concerts, intermezzos and plays at the fascinating Teatro Arsenale, a landmark that has played a key role in the city’s spiritual and artistic life from the thirteenth century to the present.

On Wednesday 3 April, the program will kick off with Gelitin, a group of Viennese artists who have become well-known to the general public for their outrageously irreverent projects. For Liberi Tutti they are presenting Ritratto Analitico, a surprise performance in which spectators will interact with the artists. Ritratto Analitico, which Gelitin has conceived specifically for the occasion, will explore the theme of drawing, in a startling dialogue between the audience and the performers which highlights the physical skills, analytical qualities, and sense of humor that are needed just to get through everyday life.

The evening of Thursday 4 April will feature Darren Bader with the new work Le Quattro Stagioni, Trois Gnossiennes, Triple DJ: three “musical incursions” that fuse performance, concert, and sculpture, with the on-stage involvement of musicians and DJs as a central element. With their assistance, the American artist will deconstruct Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Satie’s Gnossiennes, breaking the pieces down and overlapping them, to conclude with a triangular session in which three DJs, playing simultaneously, will blend their music  into a finale that the audience can dance to.

Friday 5 April will be the turn of Israeli artist Keren Cytter and Show Real Drama, a more theatrical kind of performance—presented at Tate Modern in London last autumn, and now for the first time in Italy—based on the life of her two actors, Susie Meyer and Fabian Stumm, who play themselves onstage, blending reality with fiction. In this piece, Cytter and her cast tell us about love, desire, loss, and the unpredictable nature of human communication, mixing up the standard codes, stories, and images normally used to describe them.

Last but not least, on Saturday 6 April the festival will close with The Pentothal Analyses (un ballet de cour), a completely new project by Berlin-based Thomas Zipp, who engages the audience in performances that mingle truth with fable: re-enactments and reconstructions of events that seem to have taken place in the past, but which blur the boundaries between reality and imagination in a dramatic dialogue involving costumes, music, masks, and food.

With Liberi Tutti, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, in partnership with miart, continues its mission of fostering and promoting the most original expressions of contemporary art and culture, bringing today’s most experimental forms of language into the fascinating context of the former church of San Simone e Giuda. Built in 1272, this space was deconsecrated in the Napoleonic era, then transformed into a theater, ballroom, storehouse, puppet theater, then back into a place of worship and the headquarters for various associations. Finally, in 1978, it became the famous Teatro Arsenale, which takes its name from the building’s nineteenth-century function. Teatro Arsenale still preserves the architectural features of a religious edifice, such as a rose-window facade on Via Cesare Correnti.

Liberi Tutti is a project conceived and produced by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi and miart for miart 2013.

THE ARTISTS

Gelitin is a group of four Viennese artists who first met at summer camp in 1978 and began working together creatively in 1993. From day one, their partnership has turned the concept of artwork and artist on its head, transforming both artists and art institutions into an immense playing field where everyone is invited to join in. They have had solo exhibtions at museums such as the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Belvedere in Vienna, the Kunsthaus in Bregenz, Austria, and PS1 in New York, and group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Hayward Gallery in London, Palazzo Grassi in Venice, and the 2001 Venice Biennale, where they represented Austria.

Darren Bader was born in Bridgeport, CT, USA in 1978 and lives in New York. Bader’s work appropriates a vast range of cultural material produced by others, which he treats as readymades and presents democratically alongside found objects and even live animals, exploring the territory that lies between sculpture, writing, and curating, all with a metaphysical outlook. Significant exhibitions include his solo show currently underway at Franco Noero in Turin and his recent solo shows at MoMA PS1 in New York and Sadie Coles HQ in London, in addition to group exhibitions at Lisa Cooley, Martos Gallery and the Calder Foundation in New York, and the shows he has curated at Gavin Brown’s enterprise in New York and Ritter/Zamet in London.

Keren Cytter was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1977 and lives in Berlin. Inspired by her own life and those of her friends, her work examines the conflicts that underlie human relationships, inviting viewers into existentialist, dreamlike dramas of the commonplace. She tries on many different artistic roles—choreographer, director, filmmaker, graphic designer, writer, and sound designer—using the tools and vocabulary of each to create works that function both as celebrations and critiques of the medium itself. Her work has been shown in recent solo exhibitions at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, as well as museums such at Tate Modern in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Mumok Ludwig in Vienna, GAMeC in Bergamo, and Kunsthalle Zürich. In 2006 she received the Baloise Art Prize in the Art Statements section o f Art 37 Basel.

Thomas Zipp was born in Heppenheim, Germany in 1966 and lives in Berlin. His works, which range from performance to music, draw on the language of art and museum displays as well as science, medicine, and madness. They conjure up a foreboding atmosphere of dark delirium, mingling the aesthetics of archival documentation with futuristic memorials that feel like the result of some strange modern-day witchcraft. His works have been exhibited at venues such as Tate Modern in London, the Thread Waxing Space in New York, and Stadtische Galerie in Wolfsburg.

La Fondazione Nicola Trussardi e miart, per la prima volta insieme, presentano Liberi tutti, un piccolo festival di arte dal vivo che animerà le serate della fiera d’arte contemporanea di Milano. Tutte le sere dal 3 al 6 aprile, dalle 22:00 alle 24:00, artisti internazionali metteranno in scena performance, concerti, intermezzi e pièce teatrali nell’affascinante cornice del Teatro Arsenale, luogo di emblematici avvenimenti nella vita spirituale e artistica della città dal XII secolo a oggi.

Mercoledì 3 aprile aprono il programma i Gelitin, gruppo di artisti viennesi noti al grande pubblico per le loro azioni dissacranti e provocatorie. Per Liberi tutti presentano Ritratto Analitico, una performance a sorpresa per gli spettatori che interverranno e saranno chiamati a interagire con gli artisti. Ritratto Analitico, lavoro pensato dai Gelitin per l’occasione, indagherà il tema del disegno, creando un dialogo sorprendente tra il pubblico e i performer, mostrando le capacità fisiche, le qualità analitiche e l’umorismo necessari per sopravvivere alla vita di tutti i giorni.

Giovedì 4 aprile va in scena Darren Bader con Le Quattro Stagioni, Trois Gnossiennes, Triple DJ, tre ‘incursioni musicali’ tra la performance, il concerto e la scultura, con il supporto in scena di musicisti e DJ quali elementi centrali delle azioni. Con loro, infatti, l’artista americano andrà a destrutturare in questa nuova opera le Quattro Stagioni di Vivaldi e le Gnossiennes di Satie, sovrapponendole e articolandole, per concludere con una session triangolare in cui tre dj, suonando contemporaneamente, si fonderanno in un finale danzante per il pubblico in sala.

Venerdì 5 aprile è la volta dell’artista israeliana Keren Cytter, che metterà in scena Show Real Drama, una performance dal taglio più teatrale – già presentata alla Tate Modern di Londra lo scorso autunno e ora per la prima volta in Italia – basata sulla vita di due dei suoi attori, Susie Meyer e Fabian Stumm, che sul palco rappresentano se stessi tra realtà e finzione. In questa pièce Cytter e i suoi attori ci raccontano l’amore, il desiderio, la perdita e l’imprevedibilità della comunicazione umana, rimescolando i codici standard, i racconti e le immagini solitamente usate per descrivere questi temi.

Infine, sabato 6 aprile, chiude la rassegna The Pentothal Analyses (un ballet de cour), progetto inedito del berlinese Thomas Zipp, che nelle sue performance lavora coinvolgendo il pubblico in rappresentazioni che mescolano vero e falso, rievocazioni e ricostruzioni di eventi che sembrano accaduti nel passato, ma dove si perde il confine tra realtà e immaginazione in un drammatico dialogo tra costumi, musica, maschere e cibo.

Con Liberi tutti la Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, in collaborazione con miart, prosegue nella sua azione di supporto e valorizzazione delle espressioni più originali dell’arte e della cultura contemporanea, portando i linguaggi più sperimentali di oggi negli affascinanti spazi dell’antica chiesa di San Simone e Giuda edificata nel 1272, sconsacrata in epoca napoleonica per poi essere trasformata in teatro, sala da ballo, deposito, teatro delle marionette, di nuovo in luogo di culto, sede di associazioni e infine, dal 1978, nel celebre Teatro Arsenale, che riprende nel nome la funzione di deposito svolta nell’800. Il Teatro Arsenale conserva ancora oggi gli elementi architettonici tipici di un edificio religioso, come la facciata con rosone che si affaccia su via Cesare Correnti.

GLI ARTISTI

Gelitin è un gruppo di quattro artisti viennesi che, dopo il loro primo incontro a un campo estivo nel 1978, hanno iniziato a lavorare insieme come artisti nel 1993, ribaltando fin dall’inizio della loro collaborazione il concetto di opera d’arte e di artista, trasformando se stessi e le istituzioni artistiche in un immenso campo da gioco dove tutti sono invitati a partecipare. Hanno esposto con mostre personali, tra gli altri, al Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, al Belvedere di Vienna, alla Kunsthaus di Bregenz in Austria e al MoMA PS1 di New York, in mostre collettive al Museum of Contemporary Art di Chicago, alla Hayward Gallery di Londra e a Palazzo Grassi a Venezia e hanno rappresentato l’Austria alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2001.

Darren Bader è nato a Bridgeport, USA, nel 1978 e vive a New York. Nel suo lavoro Bader si appropria di una vasta gamma di materiale culturale altrui, che tratta come ready made e presenta democraticamente al fianco di oggetti trovati e, talvolta, animali vivi, muovendosi nello spazio tra scultura, scrittura e curatela con uno sguardo metafisico. Tra le principali esposizioni ricordiamo la personale in corso alla galleria Franco Noero di Torino e le recenti personali al Moma PS1 di New York e da Sadie Coles HQ a Londra, le collettive da Lisa Cooley, alla Martos Gallery e alla Calder Foundation di New York e le mostre da lui curate da Gavin Brown’s enterprise a New York e da Ritter/Zamet a Londra.

Keren Cytter è nata a Tel Aviv, Israele, nel 1977 e vive a Berlino. Ispirato dalla sua vita e da quella dei suoi amici, il suo lavoro presenta i conflitti su cui si basano le relazioni interpersonali, invitando lo spettatore a osservare una rappresentazione esistenzialista e onirica di spaccati di vita quotidiana. Molti sono i ruoli da lei rivestiti nel suo lavoro di artista – coreografa, regista, filmmaker, grafica, scrittrice e sound-designer – di cui utilizza gli srtumenti e il vocabolario per creare opere che funzionano sia come celebrazione che come critica del mezzo stesso. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto alle recenti personali al Moderna Museet di Stoccolma e allo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam, oltre che, tra gli altri, alla Tate Modern di Londra, all’Irish Museum of Modern Art di Dublino, al Mumok Ludwig di Vienna, alla GAMeC di Bergamo e alla Kunsthalle di Zurigo. Nel 2006 ha ricevuto il Baloise Art Prize nella sezione ‘Art Statements’ di Art 37 Basel.

Thomas Zipp è nato a Heppenheim, in Germania, nel 1966 e vive a Berlino. Le sue opere, che spaziano dalla performance alla musica, si appropriano del linguaggio museale e artistico e di quello scientifico, medico e manicomiale, per trasmettere atmosfere cariche di deliranti e cupi presagi, attraverso l’estetica della documentazione archivistica e del memoriale futuristico, che le fanno percepire come il risultato di una moderna, misteriosa stregoneria. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto, tra l’altro, alla Tate Modern di Londra, al Thread Waxing Space di New York e alla Stadtische Galerie di Wolfsburg.
