miart 2013, organized by Fiera Milano and directed by Vincenzo de Bellis, presents – from 5 to 7 April – 137 Italian and foreign galleries in pavilion 3 of fieramilanocity. The fair is organized in 4 sections: Established and Emergent – reprised from the last editions, but revised in terms of the criteria for participation – and the new THENnow and Object sections. This 18th edition finally makes miart one of the leading European contemporary art events, because 40% of the exhibitors come from 15 foreign countries, and half of them are participating in miart for the first time.
Established gathers 93 international galleries of modern and contemporary art, selected by the Committee of miart 2013 from the leading names on the international scene, to create a dialogue and interaction between the two nuclei of the fair leading to reflections on the continuity of past and present, in a timespan ranging from the early 1900s to the 1980s. The modern and contemporary mix is not just a prominent characteristic of the history of the fair itself, but also a part of the overall fabric of the city, becoming the leitmotiv of everything Milan represents in the world.
Emergent is set aside for 20 young avant-garde galleries, founded after 2007, under the guidance of Andrew Bonacina, curator of the International Project Space, Birmingham.
THENnow is an invitational section – curated by Florence Derieux, director of the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, and Andrea Viliani, director of MADRE, Naples – that offers a comparison of 9 pairings of artists of different generations, one already historic figure and one young artist. These 18 artists offer an interaction between the two worlds, modern and contemporary, that have always coexisted inside miart, establishing a close dialogue in terms of both concepts and displays.
Object, another debut feature of miart 2013, is a new section – curated by Michela Pelizzari and Federica Sala, partners of PS Design Consultants, Milan – that includes a selection of galleries active in the promotion of objects of modern and contemporary design, produced as limited editions and approached as works of art.
The installation of miart 2013 has been created by Martino Berghinz, a Milanese architect known for the quality and refinement of his international fair designs, as well as for his works of architecture and interior design. The project, with colors linked to the identifying shades of the coordinated image formulated by Mousse, gives different forms to the areas for the galleries, permitting an open dialogue among the various parts. A box inside a box, right from the entrance the design stands out for the play of volumes and forms, the composition of full and empty areas, made possible by careful choice of materials with different degrees of transparency or opacity. All the furnishings have been supplied by Moroso, a company famous for its focus on contemporary forms of expression, underlining the relationship between art and design. The VIP lounge has been set up in collaboration with another name of great quality and international acclaim: Ruinart Champagne.
The fair is accompanied by many curatorial projects connected with the exhibition sections to underscore the coexistence between economic and cultural aspects.
The program of the miartalks – coordinated by Alessandro Rabottini, external curator of GAMeC, Bergamo, and Fionn Meade, a writer and curator based in New York – is a platform for lectures, conversations and interviews featuring the participation of 25 speakers, including some of the most influential voices on the international scene of contemporary art and design, including Chus Martínez, Chief Curator El Museo del Barrio, New York, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator Architecture & Design Museum of Modern Art, New York and Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-Director Serpentine Gallery, London.
A cycle of conversations on the theme of travel, with artists like Carsten Höller, Simon Starling and Goshka Macuga, has been organized in collaboration with Humboldt.
Studio - bimonthly cultural magazine (www.rivistastudio.com) will bring an insight to the exhibition introducing the miart special feature.
miart 2013 also hosts a bookstore specialized in art, photography and design, organized by Walther König, the great German bookseller and publisher.
There are also many publishing partnerships including the book, edited by Francesco Garutti and Vincenzo de Bellis and published by Walther König, on the present format of international art fairs, and a new series, published by Johan & Levi, on the personalities and themes of art, with four titles per year: the first, on Andrea Branzi, will be presented during miart 2013.
miart 2013 sets out to function as a collector of different spheres, structures and experiences: a meeting place for the various professional roles connected with the world of contemporary art, and a place of not merely economic, but also cultural exchange, in the ideal location of Milan, with its history of modernity in art, architecture and design. The unique characteristics of the city are now expressed not only in the sections of the fair, which have been reconfigured and opened to new input, but also in the creation of a wide-ranging off-fair program.
The latter includes an important project produced in collaboration with Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, with a series of events taking place in the evenings during the week of the fair.
Many public and private institutions will join forces, this year, with the miart program: they include the PAC-Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Reale, thanks to the collaboration with the City of Milan, together with Fondazione Prada and HangarBicocca, while for design the Triennale, Fondazione Castiglioni and Fondazione Portaluppi will open their exhibitions, offering special events during the period of the fair.
In this way, a complete overview of the art and design found in Milan will be available to the general public and to the 150 international VIP guests (museum directors, curators, collectors, critics) miart has invited for an exclusive three-day program, coordinated by Damiana Leoni, composed of previews, encounters, visits to museums and foundations in the city, for full immersion in the atmosphere that has made Milan famous all over the world.

miart 2013, organizzata da Fiera Milano dal 5 al 7 aprile e diretta da Vincenzo de Bellis, presenta 137 gallerie italiane ed estere nel padiglione 3 di fieramilanocity ed è articolata in 4 sezioni: Established ed Emergent - confermate dalle scorse edizioni, ma riconfigurate nei parametri di partecipazione – e le nuove THENnow e Object. Questa diciottesima edizione della fiera entra finalmente a pieno titolo tra le principali manifestazioni d’arte contemporanea europee poiché il 40% degli Espositori proviene da 15 Paesi esteri e oltre la metà di essi partecipano a miart per la prima volta.
Established riunisce 93 gallerie internazionali d’arte moderna e contemporanea, selezionate dal Comitato di miart 2013 tra le più affermate del panorama internazionale, creando confronto e dialogo tra le due anime della fiera per offrire al pubblico un’occasione di riflessione sulla continuità tra passato e presente in un arco temporale che va dagli inizi del Novecento agli anni Ottanta. Il mix moderno e contemporaneo non solo è radicato nella storia della fiera, ma fa parte anche del tessuto generale della città al punto da divenire il filo conduttore di tutto ciò che Milano è nel mondo.
Emergent è riservata a 20 giovani gallerie d’avanguardia, nate dopo il 2007, ed è curata da Andrew Bonacina, curator International Project Space, Birmingham.
THENnow è una sezione su invito – curata da Florence Derieux, directrice FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims e Andrea Viliani, direttore MADRE, Napoli – che mette a confronto 9 coppie di artisti di generazioni diverse, uno già storicizzato e un giovane artista, in modo da esprimere attraverso questi 18 artisti i due mondi, moderno e contemporaneo, che da sempre convivono a miart, entrando in stretto dialogo sia dal punto di vista concettuale, sia da quello allestitivo.
Object, tra le novità di miart 2013, è una nuova sezione – curata da Michela Pelizzari e Federica Sala, Partners PS design consultants, Milano – che comprende una selezione di gallerie attive nella promozione di oggetti di design moderno e contemporaneo concepiti in edizione limitata e fruiti come opere d’arte.
L’allestimento di miart 2013 è ideato da Martino Berghinz, architetto milanese noto per la qualità e la raffinatezza degli allestimenti fieristici internazionali, oltre che per i progetti di architettura, interior design. Il progetto, cromaticamente ispirato al gradiente identificativo dell’immagine coordinata pensata da Mousse, mira a dare forme diverse alle aree destinate alle gallerie così da differenziarle lasciando un dialogo aperto tra le varie parti. Scatola nella scatola, fin dall’ingresso l’allestimento si caratterizza per il suo gioco di volumi, forme e sovrapposizioni tra pieni e vuoti, rese possibili da un’attenta scelta di materiali con diversi gradi di trasparenza e opacità. Tutti gli arredi della fiera sono messi a disposizione da Moroso, celebre azienda da sempre attenta alle espressioni della contemporaneità, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare il rapporto tra arte e design. La vip lounge è realizzata in collaborazione con un altro nome di grande qualità e internazionalmente apprezzato: Champagne Ruinart.
Alla fiera sono affiancati numerosi progetti curatoriali legati alle sezioni espositive per sottolineare la convivenza tra le due anime della fiera, quella economica insieme al profilo culturale.
Il programma dei miartalks - curati da Alessandro Rabottini, curatore esterno GAMeC, Bergamo e Fionn Meade, scrittore e curatore, New York – è una piattaforma per conferenze, conversazioni e interviste alle quali partecipano 25 relatori, che rappresentano le voci più influenti nell’ambito dell’arte contemporanea e del design internazionale come Chus Martínez, Chief Curator El Museo del Barrio, New York, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator Architecture & Design Museum of Modern Art, New York e Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-Director Serpentine Gallery, Londra.
Un ciclo di conversazioni sul tema del viaggio con artisti come Carsten Höller, Simon Starling, Goshka Macuga è realizzato in collaborazione con Humboldt.
Studio, rivista bimestrale di attualità culturale (www.rivistastudio.com), porterà il proprio sguardo sulla fiera presentando dal vivo lo speciale dedicato a miart.
miart 2013 ospita la libreria specializzata in arte, fotografia e design di Walther König, grande libraio ed editore tedesco.
Molte le partnership editoriali tra le quali il libro, a cura di Francesco Garutti e Vincenzo de Bellis e pubblicato da Walther König, sul format attuale delle fiere d’arte internazionali e una nuova collana, pubblicata da Johan & Levi dedicata a personaggi e temi dell’arte con la cadenza di quattro titoli all’anno: il primo, dedicato a Andrea Branzi viene presentato nel corso di miart 2013.
miart 2013 intende essere un collettore di ambiti, strutture ed esperienze diverse: un luogo d’incontro tra le diverse professionalità legate al mondo dell’arte contemporanea e di scambio non solo economico, ma anche culturale, e Milano con la sua storia di modernità nell’arte, nell’architettura e nel design rappresenta il luogo ideale. Questi caratteri unici della fisionomia cittadina vengono oggi espressi non solo dalle sezioni della fiera, riconfigurate e aperte a nuovi ambiti, ma anche dall’ideazione di un ampio programma esterno.
All’interno di quest’ultimo si inserisce un importante progetto realizzato in collaborazione tra miart e la Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, che con una serie di eventi anima le serate della settimana della fiera.
Molte le istituzioni pubbliche e private che si uniscono quest’anno al programma di miart: tra queste il PAC-Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, la Galleria d’Arte Moderna, il Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Reale, grazie alla collaborazione con il Comune di Milano, insieme alla Fondazione Prada e all’HangarBicocca mentre per il design la Triennale, la Fondazione Castiglioni e la Fondazione Portaluppi aprono le loro mostre e presentano eventi speciali sempre in concomitanza della fiera.
Viene così proposta l’offerta completa di arte e design presente a Milano sia al grande pubblico che ai 150 ospiti VIP internazionali (direttori di musei, curatori, collezionisti, critici) che miart invita per una tre giorni di programma esclusivo, a cura di Damiana Leoni, costituito da anteprime, incontri, visite a musei e fondazioni cittadine nell’atmosfera che rende celebre la città nel mondo.
