On September 20, 2011 Massimo De Carlo, together with Ludovico Pratesi as coordinator, brings to Rome Three Amigos, a unique and unpublished project which includes three different solo shows of three young, internationally renowned American artists, Dan Colen, Nate Lowman and Dash Snow, at Palazzo Rospigliosi, at the American Academy in Rome and at MACRO. Three significant places that symbolize Rome’s historical, influential and contemporary soul, thus become specialized venues in which the artists develop three distinct projects appositely studied and realized for this specific occasion.

In January 2007, New York Magazine published on its cover the image of three young guys sleeping close to one another. The article defined them as “Warhol’s Children”, and talked about a group of young New York artists, including Dash Snow, Dan Colen and Nate Lowman, who shook the city and the entire contemporary art world. With their provocative, scandalous and politically incorrect works, these artists talked about themselves, their lives and their city, in a completely new style loaded with quotations and references to personal events which, at the time, caused a stir. The so-called Bowery School was considered as one big family.

In a short time these artists came to the fore by collaborating with some of the world’s most prestigious galleries and participating in international exhibitions in museums and private institutions. In July 2009 Dash Snow, casualty of a life beyond bounds, died of a heroin overdose. After this tragedy, the group of friends did not break up but became more cohesive, finding new signifiers and inspiring themes for their works.

Massimo De Carlo brings to the Italian capital city these three artists as major exponents of a new generation capable of writing new chapters of the history of contemporary art. An unprecedented and ambitious project that sees Dan Colen at Palazzo Rospigliosi, a historically relevant building, symbol of baroque and papal Rome, Nate Lowman in the Art Gallery of the American Academy in Rome and Dash Snow at the MACRO, in his first personal show in a museum.

Il 20 settembre 2011 Massimo De Carlo, con il coordinamento di Ludovico Pratesi, porta a Roma Three Amigos, un progetto inedito, unico nel suo genere, che vede esporre in tre mostre personali distinte tre giovani artisti americani di fama internazionale, Dan Colen, Nate Lowman e Dash Snow, rispettivamente a Palazzo Rospigliosi, all’American Academy in Rome e al MACRO. Tre luoghi significativi, simbolo dell’anima storica, formativa e contemporanea di Roma, diventano sedi privilegiate in cui gli artisti sviluppano tre distinti progetti pensati e realizzati in relazione alla natura specifica dei luoghi.

Sulla copertina del numero di gennaio del 2007 il New York Magazine pubblicò l’immagine di tre ragazzi mentre dormivano, uno accanto all’altro. L’articolo li definiva “figli di Warhol“, e parlava di un gruppo di giovani artisti newyorkesi, fra cui Dash Snow, Dan Colen e Nate Lowman, che stava scuotendo la città e il mondo intero dell’arte contemporanea. Con i loro lavori provocatori, scandalosi e politicamente scorretti questi ragazzi raccontavano se stessi, la loro vita, la loro città, in uno stile completamente nuovo che all’epoca fece molto scalpore, ricco di citazioni e riferimenti a vicende personali. La cosiddetta Bowery School era considerata un’unica, grande famiglia.

In poco tempo si fecero conoscere attraverso collaborazioni con alcune delle gallerie più prestigiose del mondo e con la partecipazione ad esposizioni internazionali in musei ed istituzioni private. Ma nel luglio del 2009, vittima di quella vita sopra le righe, Dash Snow muore a causa di un’overdose di eroina. Nella tragedia il gruppo di amici non si sfalda, anzi, diventa ancora più coeso, trova nuovi significati e nuovi temi da cui trarre ispirazione e su cui lavorare.

Massimo De Carlo porta nella capitale italiana questi tre artisti come massimi esponenti di una nuova generazione di autori capaci di scrivere nuovi capitoli di storia dell’arte contemporanea. Un progetto ambizioso e senza precedenti che vede protagonisti Dan Colen a Palazzo Rospigliosi, un palazzo storico, simbolo della Roma papalina e barocca, Nate Lowman all’interno delle sale dell’American Academy in Rome e Dash Snow al MACRO, nella sua prima mostra personale in un museo.
