The artistic recherche in the twentieth century introduced the concept of free space, with no perspective at all. From the second half of century the space and its travels are stepped into our life, affecting the public imagination. Space travels have supplied information on moon surface, its composition, on planetary system, taking the place of some mind process. Space travel, internet, presence in the sky of artificial satellites beside the light of stars, have changed one’s own mind’s eye. The new system is part of our own every day life, enfolding in mystery even the ordinary acts of daily life. The infinite is a body, a space where few people can gain access to, inhabited by new heroes and characters, who are the crusaders, conjunction of times, of worlds, a long way off those of John Cage who created his own music putting to staff the lay-out of constellations.

The expanding of scientific research and the technological progress have its counterpoint in the world of contemporary art, that is orientated towards realistic or true approach by which it is possible to reconstruct the creativity. Skies populated of stations, natural and artificial stars look at the hard work of the human being from above. The real fact for the artists Raffaella Losapio and Benjamin Shilling are the spatial small crafts, the visible carrier which uses the unseen in order to reach its goal. With renewed romanticism, the artists travel the space by different tools just of their own Art.

Benjamin Shilling through his work The Yuri Gagarin Contraband collects and imagines the sensations, fears and nightmares of a travel into space, trying to near the experience of the astronauts, assuming the sensation, beginning from one’s own personal experience of a flight around the world. Author of poetry works and musical compositions Benjamin Shilling is not assuming spatial sounds in his music, he tries to reach the music of the travel inner resonance. The concords have metallic vibrations over which the poetic acting is laid down on the extension of day, on his correspondence (In owe of my postcard from space) or on exchange of information from space (Now it feels new). The poet/musician steps over the event audience threshold and by his work creates a “multiple oneness”, a sharing, an involvement in spatial route.

The multimedia artist Raffaella Losapio dedicates her art to dialogue with the “Zeitgeist”, the spirit of artistic and scientific research with her own involvement into two directions: follows the events and the world artistic activity combining everything inside her life and her Webzine 1F Mediaproject founded by herself; she orientated her multimedia art to create a modern mythology through her participation in the world of facts. Her works portrait the true space ikons, the astronauts, and the relevant spatial small-crafts which are the launcher to overcome the limit. Her skies, the astral landscapes are between abstraction and figuration. Like the artist of the white monochromy does, the artist works on extreme, she is always on the way to become something of other.

The lunar landing is a strong signal for the second twentieth century generation: it is the point where to start a new language with a real concept of unlimited space. The earliest astronaut through his heroic and concrete disposition towards the beyond, is the formative muse of a science-fiction genre, of characters like Mazinga, which have changed the relationship between man-machines. The earliest works of Raffaella Losapio (Post Human, Life on Mars, Perceptions of Space, Space walk, Astro.net, all during 2004) indicate, embrace, point out the pathway which has been paged later in a dense narration of the contemporary epic. The artist works the images taken from documentations scattered on NASA site reworking them by her research on light and line vibration. Having meditated on the body of a car engine like Ferrari, hence on an idea of a ground speed, Raffaella Losapio is passed on tackling the spatial thrust: she had to imagine the different intensity and different visual resonance.

The series of works Dal Cielo ci guardano, in honour of the title of event, shows the spaceship extending the lateral wings almost to create a protective cloak over the Earth, fusing suggestions of religious art and a look at the future. On the sidereal surfaces proposed by the artist, the astronaut or the small-crafts are origin of light sapiently arranged, made conceptual into spatial imagination. And I think to the wonderful respondency among the silver-like colour of the suit, of the small-craft and the concept of white, as a representation of the infinite.

On the corner of Yuri Gagarin and Space Row A”.

Benjamin Samuel Shilling was born on 17th January 1977 in England. He started singing in a choir at the age of ten and from then acted in a number of musicals and plays. He started writing poetry in his late teens and formed a band when he was eighteen which is when he started writing songs in collaboration with the group. They did a series of recordings as well as playing live concerts in Kent and London.

After his group disbanded he searched for a new outlet for his poetry. He started to learn the guitar by himself, breaking three strings in the process. Not being able to restring the guitar sufficiently well enough, he eventually wrote his first song alone, aptly named “Three Strung Blues.” After studying Performance Art, Theatre and Drama and graduating from University in London, in 2000, Ben spent a year travelling abroad. On his journey, he circumnavigated the globe and crossed the International Date Line, losing a day in the process.

This ‘lost day’ has come to represent the void in time and space that is inherent within Benjamin’s current project. At the beginning of 2003, Ben found a job at a music and language school in Kurashiki, Japan where he spent two years. During this time he wrote his first songs using six strings “Where I Am” and “The Real Question”. ‘The Yuri Gagarin Contraband’ was born in Warsaw, Poland, where Ben spent three and a half years living and working until 2008. During this time he wrote a poem inspired by two streets close to his apartment, ‘Ulica Gagarina’ and ‘Ulica Spacerowa’ entitled “On the corner of Yuri Gagarin and Space Row A.”

He performed his first solo concerts as ‘The Yuri Gagarin Contraband’ in Warsaw using slides and video projection in 2007. From 2008 until 2009 Ben lived in England working in London. During this time he performed a few concerts as ‘The Yuri Gagarin Contraband’ with a drummer/percussionist and occasional double bass player. Ben took a job in Sicily at the beginning of 2009 and stayed until June 2010.
In September of that year he relocated to Rome where he currently works and lives.

In April 2011 he performed a concert in Rome entitled ‘A Round Trip’ to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin circumnavigating the globe. This will be his second concert in Rome as ‘The Yuri Gagarin Contraband’.
